Bridal Shower Speeches
-- Bridal Shower Speeches --
The invitations have been sent, the cake has been ordered, and the favors have been carefully wrapped with the perfect ribbon. Now, it’s time to start thinking about bridal shower speeches – who will make them, when they will be done, and, if you plan to make one yourself, what you will say. Some people who might give speeches are the mother of the bride, the planner / host, and the bride herself.
What to Avoid One of the most important aspects of planning a speech (which is, unfortunately, often overlooked), is what not to say. For a bridal shower, remember that you are in the company of a diverse group of women, who likely range in ages. Translation: Don’t tell the story about how drunk you got the first week of college. Keep the toast PG-13, and don’t say anything that might embarrass the bride. Ex boyfriends, drinking, and anything less-than prim is generally better left unsaid. Not sure if it will be appropriate or not? Don’t take your chances!
Tone and Timing This is the perfect time for a sentimental; heart felt speech from the mother to her dear daughter. Offer some words of wisdom, some advice, and most of all, speak from the heart! What has your friendship meant to you over the years? Why is her fiancé the luckiest man on earth? Not sure when to make your speech? It’s really up to you. Why not welcome your guests by saying a few sweet words once everyone has arrived. It’s also the perfect time to let everyone know if any special events are planned – for example, you might greet guests, say a few words about the bride-to-be, and then let guests know that cake will be served after you play a few games. Or, if you’re planning a sit down meal, you might make a speech as everyone is seated. Remember not to leave your speech to the end of the shower, as some guests may have already dispersed. Always be sincere, and don’t plan your speech out too much – just speak what’s on your mind! Make the bride-to-be feel extra special by reminding her of fun times you’ve shared.
Seeking inspiration Sometimes, the words we want to say are difficult to put on paper. In these cases, it’s often a good idea to turn to some of the greatest literary voices. By including some famous love quotes or friendship quotes in your bridal shower speech, you’ll add a timeless and elegant touch to your words.
Keep It Simple You’re not addressing the nation – there’s no need to write down a long and complicated speech. Try to keep it between two and three minutes, maximum.
If You’re the Bride If you’re the one tying the knot, it is a sweet gesture to say a few words at your bridal shower. In particular, thank everyone for coming, and give a special thank you to the host and the organizers of the day. Just a few sentences is all that’s necessary! Planning a speech can be very stressful – after all, public speaking is one of the top fears listed by women. But remember, you are in good company, and everyone is happy to be there celebrating a wonderful event! If you’re really not comfortable making a speech, consider a short toast.
