Host a Project Runway Bridal Shower
-- Project Runway Bridal Shower --
What's the only smart thing to do when a bride-to-be harbors a serious addiction to Project Runway? Indulge her with a Project Runway wedding shower, of course! All the things (and people!) that define Project Runway can translate beautifully into the different aspects of a bridal shower party. Invitations, favors, cake - you name it, Project Runway inspires it. Draw from the ideas below to create a modern, exciting, and sometimes plain hilarious Project Runway theme bridal shower.
1. Invitations Chic, sweet, humorous: you can get away with a range of possibilities for Project Runway bridal shower invitations. A simple dress form draped with a wedding gown makes a sweet statement. For more drama, try a high-impact silhouette of a (noticeably stylish) woman on the town. -- Project Runway Bridal Shower -- Or have fun incorporating a few familiar faces onto the invitations. Pair your favorite Tim Gunn image with the quote, "Let's Knock Her Socks Off!" Perhaps let Heidi entice your guests, asking, "Are you in?" Get creative with this. You may want to adorn the invitation with the face of the bride's favorite Project Runway designer and, if they have one, an idiosyncratic phrase. What or who will make the bride happiest once she sees the invitation after the fact? 2. Decorations and Centerpieces
On a large, white sheet of paper, stencil the word "project," using the show's logo as your template. Choose a color with which to fill in the letters. Directly beneath that, sketch the bride-to-be's name in the semi-trapezoidal box in which the word "runway" usually appears. Because the colors of the two words are reversed, use the paint/marker to fill in the box surrounding the bride's name. Leave those letters white. And voila, you now have a custom made decoration for your Project Runway bridal shower! This works equally well with white material and fabric paint.Spread each table with a fun, bold-print tablecloth. Look for styles online or make your own with a few yards of fabric from the craft store. For a vibrant centerpiece, select bright, big-headed flowers such as dahlias or peonies in a color complementary to the tablecloths. Cluster the blooms in a square, rather squat glass vessel, trimming the stems so that the flower heads just peek out over the rim.-- Project Runway Bridal Shower -- 3. Games and Activities Both of these activities involve a runway of your own! Designate a stretch of ground in a central area of the room to serve as your runway, perhaps stemming out of the room's entrance. Make its presence known by lining the section with bright strips of tape or laying down a runner carpet. As guests arrive, have them walk down the runway. Allocate one of the party planners to stand (or kneel) at the end of the runway, snapping photographs of each guest as she enters! A Polaroid camera is handy but not necessary; just send the photographs out after the party is over and the film developed! Next to the gift-opening, this activity will certainly stand out as one of the bridal shower highlights! Involving designers at work, appearances by some of our favorite judges, and a complete runway show, everyone present is bound to have a ball! Before the shower, with the other party planners, decide who among the bride's friends and family would make the perfect Heidi, Michael, and Nina. Who can best capture their distinct personalities and really have fun with the role? For extra effect, those chosen might even dress like their famous counterparts. For example, the person portraying Michael could wear a black shirt beneath a black sports coat; Heidi, a sleek little dress, and so on. The premise of this activity plays on the traditional make-a-dress-out-of-toilet-paper game. Your guests (at least, those who want to play; some may just wish to watch) will break into little design teams. Plan in advance a fun way to get everyone sorted into groups. Each team must choose one person to be their model. The groups will be given materials with which to make an outfit. You can stick with the wedding dress idea, or give the "designers" the freedom to create anything they want. Supply toilet paper, paper towels, or even inexpensive fabric. Also provide glue, scissors, tape, sequins, buttons, trim, fabric scissors, needles and thread - whatever you want! Go all out by creating your own Bluefly accessory wall, filled with purses, jewelry, and shoes for the teams to use as appropriate! When you are ready to begin this activity at the bridal shower, place four chairs at the head of the room. The people playing the three judges should take their places. "Heidi" can then stand up and explain to the guests what exactly the game entails. Consider this to be the presentation of a challenge to the designers. She can announce that everybody will join a group of three or four, depending on the number of guests and the amount of materials you have purchased. "Heidi" can say a particularly Heidi-ish phrase such as, "You may have noticed there is an empty chair up here. That is for our surprise guest judge. Shall we introduce her?" She then declares that - surprise! It's the bride-to-be! Have her join the judges and just have fun watching the designers go to work! After an allotted amount of time, the teams must finish creating. It's runway time! Turn on some music and let each model take a turn on the catwalk. At the end of the show, the judges should describe what they liked or didn't like about each design. The "guest judge," of course, will choose the winner! Award each member of the winning team a prize! Seriously, with what but a Project Runway theme bridal shower can you get away with this much fun? -- Project Runway Bridal Shower -- 4. The Menu A champagne brunch presents lots of mouth-watering possibilities. And doesn't a Project Runway bridal shower call for a tasty, upscale meal? Brioche French toast. Offer syrup, confectioner's sugar, and warm strawberry compote. Quiche. Fresh fruit. Chocolate-covered strawberries count! Crepes. Muffins or cinnamon rolls. Omelets. Thin crust pizza topped with delicacies such as smoked salmon. Browse Foodnetwork.com for loads of great ideas. Miniature potato pancakes, served with a dollop of sour cream. 5. Favor Ideas
Sugar cookies pressed with cookie cutters in the shape of a dress, shoe, etc. A cute pincushion. Pocket mirror. Mini sewing kit. A champagne flute filled with candies. 6. Cake If you are having a sheet cake made, Project Runway-inspired designs can be printed onto edible paper. Tim Gunn, the bride's favorite design pattern, or the New York skyline all make sense with the theme.
Cupcakes in a yummy flavor are a nice alternative to a large cake. Use icing to draw the bride's initial onto already-iced cupcakes! 7. Gifts for the Bride Unless the bride sews, you may not want to interpret this portion of the bridal shower to fit the theme. If you do want to bestow fashion related gifts upon her, however, go for it! Here are some ideas: A piece of clothing or an accessory that you made, whether through sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, beading, etc. An iron and ironing board. Gift basket full of sewing notions, thread, seam ripper, tape measure, buttons, and a lint roller. If you want to splurge, buy her an outfit by one her favorite fashion designers, whether or not they're from Project Runway! If you yourself don't watch Project Runway, I can't tell you how grateful the bride will be for all the effort you've put into learning about this world of its own. Have fun, and enjoy your Project Runway bridal shower!
